Tri for Les: “Triathlon swimming made easy”

SWIM-1

Basketball was my thing growing up and despite being short, slow and unable to jump very high (slapping the backboard on lay-ups was pretty much my vertical peak) I learned a lot from my hooping days.

One of the phrases that stuck with me over the years is, “Work smarter, not harder.” My coach used to say it all the time and even though it sounds so simple, it’s much easier said than done.

Dominate your 2013 New Year’s training resolutions

finish-line

I hope you’re as excited for 2013 as I am.

For starters, we survived the Mayan-predicted apocalypse on Dec. 21, 2012! I even had some fun at work in the process, coming up with this Facebook post. You know how I’m always preaching relevant content? Nothing’s more relevant than the end of the world!

In the process of putting together my list of goals for 2013 – which currently includes becoming an Ironman, getting my scuba-diving and CPR certification, taking a Krav Maga class and volunteering once a month – it soon became clear how easy it is to get wrapped up in all the excitement and try to take on too much all at once.

I needed a strategy.

So I gathered a few tips on how to make New Year’s resolutions the smart way, and tied them to triathlon training strategy.

Read my latest post on Tri for Les and let me know what you think: Dominate your 2013 New Year’s training resolutions

Here’s to an exciting, productive and healthy 2013 – and to dominating those bucket lists!

Designing Tri for Les: Lavaman

Triathlons and fundraising have taken up the large majority of my time over the past year and I wanted to take a moment to show how I incorporated and sharpened my design skills on the road leading to my recent Tri for Les Lavaman race.

I designed the images below in Photoshop with a few key elements in mind:

  • Purple drops – to represent Team in Training and LLS
  • “Live every day” – a quote from my aunt Leslie, to whom Tri for Les is dedicated
  • Triathlon – swim, bike, run

Lavaman: 2:44:09

It’s tough not to get nervous and panic a bit when you’re crammed in the water, among hundreds of other triathletes, waiting anxiously for the gunshot to start the race.

The challenge ahead appeared so daunting. And considering the months of training; the late nights and early mornings; and all the people who helped me get to that point, the pressure to perform quickly built up.

I worried about all the things that could go wrong out on the course: a cramp in the open water; a flat tire on the side of the highway; a misstep on a lava rock.

I wanted to dominate this race for my supporters, my coaches and teammates, the patients and families who benefit from Team In Training and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and for my aunt Leslie.

But it’s tough to take yourself too seriously when the back of your neck reads, “It’s not a race till I poop myself.”
